Running the Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon? Lucky you! Not only are you about to conquer one of Uganda’s most scenic races, but you’re also stepping into the real-life Wakanda!
Western Uganda is packed with jaw-dropping landscapes, iconic wildlife, and unforgettable experiences – some even featured in Marvel's Black Panther. So why not make the most of your trip? Here are 10 epic adventures to experience while you’re here!

1. Tree-climbing lions and elephants at Queen Elizabeth National Park
Did you know lions and leopards can climb trees? Yep, and you can see it for yourself at Queen Elizabeth National Park! Head to Ishasha and look up to spot these feline acrobats lounging in fig trees. Plus, keep your eyes peeled for elephants, buffalo, hippos, and a ton of bird species.
Stay at a lodge in the park for the ultimate experience. The full marathon (42 km) starts at the Equator at the border of the national park, so you'll be close to the action!
2. Trek with chimpanzees in Kyambura Gorge
Fancy a walk on the wild side? Kyambura Gorge, aka the “Valley of Apes,” is where you can trek through thick forest and spot chimps in their natural hangout. Kyambura is at the eastern edge of Queen Elizabeth National Park and a must-visit!
It’s like stepping into a wildlife documentary – only you’re right there in the middle of it.

3. Hike the legendary Rwenzori Mountains
Known as Ptolemy's “Mountains of the Moon,” the Rwenzori Mountains are the highest block of mountains on the African continent and home to Africa's third highest mountain: Mt. Stanley and Margherita Peak at 5,109 me asl. The national park offers hikes for every level:
- Day hike: A quick taste of the lush terrain.
- 2-day hike: Trek up to Lake Mahoma and stay the night.
- 5/7-day hike to summit Margherita Peak (5,109 m.asl.): For the truly adventurous, conquer Africa’s third-highest peak via the Central Circuit or Kilembe Trail.
Did you know that the Rwenzori Mountains were used to create the mountain home of the Jabari tribe in Black Panther?

4. Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
One of Uganda’s most iconic wildlife experiences, gorilla trekking in Bwindi is nothing short of magical. Track these gentle giants in their natural forest habitat—a bucket-list experience that pairs perfectly with your marathon journey. Uganda is home to more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population, mostly found in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
More importantly, in Uganda, gorilla permits cost about half of what they do in neighbouring Rwanda. Gorilla on budget(ish)!

5. Visit Arabica coffee farmers in the Rwenzoris
If you love coffee (who doesn’t?), you’ll want to visit the Arabica coffee farmers in the Rwenzori Mountains. You’ll see how coffee is grown and processed at source.
Uganda is the largest coffee exporter on the African continent, and the origin of Robusta coffee. The Rwenzori region specifically is home to some of Uganda’s finest Arabica coffee. Visit local coffee-growing communities to learn about traditional coffee processing and support small-scale farmers.
6. Marvel at the crater lakes in Fort Portal or Bunyaruguru
Dotted across the landscape, these picturesque crater lakes are perfect for a scenic hike or a relaxed day out. In Fort Portal, you’ll find pristine lakes surrounded by lush hills, while Bunyaruguru and Rubirizi offers serene waters like the iconic twin lakes.

7. Farm stay with Ankole cows in Mbarara
If you’re into rural experiences, spend a night at a farm in Mbarara. Get up close with majestic Ankole cows, known for their massive horns.
Learn about traditional cattle rearing, milk a cow and get to know about the importance of these cows to the Ankole culture.

8. Discover Lake Bunyonyi (Wakanda Forever!)
If your route takes you through Kabale from Kigali, make a stop at Lake Bunyonyi. Known as the ‘Place of Many Little Birds’ and its idyllic islands, it’s also famous as a filming location for the Marvel movie “Black Panther.” Take a boat ride or a refreshing swim in one of Africa’s deepest lakes.
9. Visit the Source of the Nile in Jinja
Not in Western Uganda, BUT if you’re driving from Kenya, Jinja is the perfect stopover on your way to Kasese. Known as the adventure capital of Uganda, it’s where the Nile begins its long journey to the Mediterranean. Try white-water rafting or simply enjoy the river views.

10. Cross the Equator at Kikorongo
Just outside Queen Elizabeth National Park, the Equator marker at Kikorongo is a must-stop for a classic photo op. It’s one of the few places on earth where you can stand in both the northern and southern hemispheres simultaneously! This also serves as the starting line for the 42 km runners at the marathon, giving us the honor of being the only marathon on the planet that crosses the Equator.
