Standard Chartered Bank Reaffirms Commitment to the Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon for Third Consecutive Year

Kampala, Uganda – Standard Chartered HQ, Speke Road – The Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon is proud to announce that Standard Chartered Bank, for the third consecutive year, has renewed its commitment as one of the marathon’s main partners and sponsors. This ongoing partnership continues to play a pivotal role in the success of the marathon, which has become a beacon for promoting health, discovering athletic talent, and raising awareness about environmental sustainability in Uganda.

Standard Chartered Bank has significantly enhanced this year's marathon by sponsoring the prize money for both the 42 km and 21 km races. The prize money for this year’s marathon will be distributed among the top finishers in each category as follows:

  • Men’s 42 km: UGX 10 million for the winner, with cash prizes for the top 6 finishers.
  • Ladies’ 42 km: UGX 10 million for the winner, with cash prizes for the top 6 finishers.
  • Men’s 21 km: UGX 7 million for the winner, with cash prizes for the top 5 finishers.
  • Ladies’ 21 km: UGX 7 million for the winner, with cash prizes for the top 5 finishers.

In addition to these awards, special cash prizes will be given to the best local talent from the Rwenzori region and Persons With Disabilities (PWDs), further emphasizing the marathon's commitment to inclusivity and community support.

Beyond their financial support, Standard Chartered Bank is taking meaningful steps towards environmental conservation. In alignment with their long-term strategy against deforestation, the bank will be planting trees in Kasese, contributing to the marathon’s vision of fostering a sustainable future for the region. This initiative highlights the marathon's dual focus on promoting physical well-being and environmental stewardship.

While addressing journalists at a press conference, the Standard Chartered Uganda Chief Executive Officer, Sanjay Rughani said;

“As Standard Chartered, we are very pleased to sponsor the Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon to a tune of Ugx 140 million this year. The funds will be used to increase the prize money for all race categories including special cash prizes for the best local talent from the Rwenzori region and Persons with Disabilities. With our increased sponsorship we aim to make this marathon more lucrative and attractive for athletes who also use it as a springboard to participate in international competitions now that it is accredited.”

He added: “As a Bank we have always believed in the ability of sports driving a whole ecosystem of value in bringing people from various nations together, building the image of the country, promoting health, promoting tourism, is good for business and corporate team building.

Beyond our sponsorship of this marathon, our involvement as Bank extends to environmental initiatives like tree planting in the Rwenzori region. Since inception, we have been planting trees in Kasese in a bid to support efforts to preserve the natural beauty of the Rwenzori Mountains and its surroundings, ensuring that this iconic landscape can be enjoyed for generations to come.”
